Hi Denzil and Aubrey, It appears that the UASC is doing good work Denzil. Its good that UASC is conducting the beach memorial run. I remember I used to run on Juhu Beach daily throughout the summer holidays and during the just completed summer vacations, I ran on Indian Harbour Beach where we live, daily in the mornings with my sons Jason and Jonathan and nephews Jim and Jude. BTW there is one aspect of Beach running that I am very sensitive about. We do not run on the firm, wet sand - I always insist that we run on the soft, dry sand - there is less resistance and it helps build muscles. It is also safer from the under-tow currents.
UASC should also tie up with organizations in North India and have some altitude training camps in the Himalayas (eg Tenzing Norgay Himalayan Institute in Darjeeling) - I believe that is the secret of the success of many Kenyan, Ethiopian aand Mexican long and miiddle distance runners. Altitude training (also with weekly alternations - one week on the beach and one week at high altitudes) may ensure that all track gold medals come to UASC and Bandra in the future and the Tata Shield may become a permanent fixture in Stanislaus' showcase ! I also recommend altitude training for the Stanislaus hockey players - going to the himalayas everyweek may be impractible for them may be you should look out for saome thing closer like Mahableshwar, Matheran or St Stanislaus Villas in Khandala or Lonavala - although the height may not be much. I have done altitude training with the 1992 US Olympic Hockey team - we used to alternate weekly between our training camps in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Mission Viejo near the beaches of Southern California - it was a good endurance-building exercise and you could feel the difference every week. (Pplease dont share these ideas with any athletes from St. Marys and Don Bosco - we need to make sure the Tata Shield and all the Hockey trophies become a permanent fixture in the Stanislaus showcase. And Aubrey, Please dont remind the Aussie Hockey team of altitude training - that's part of our strategy to help India win the Olympic Gold medal in 2008 and the World Cup in 2010). see link below for more info on altitude training: http://sportsci.org/traintech/altitude/wgh.html There is a relatively large Goan community in Kenya these days. The law and order situation there is deteriorating. Many parents wish to send thier kids to better schools in Bombay. The Jesuits of Bombay should initiate a focused effort to recruit the best altitude-trained Kenyan kids of Indian descent from Kenya and boost the performance and make St. Stanislaus High School and St. Xaviers College athletic powerhouses and with this formula we can have many more Lavy Pintos do India proud today and for the foreseeable future !
