The Department of Posts has formally launched the booking of Speed Post letters 
under the recently announced “One India One Rate – Speed Post” by Shri 
Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology. Smt. 
Jyotsna Diesh, Secretary, Department of Posts launched the new scheme here 
today. 

Under the new scheme, Speed Post letters upto 50 grams can be sent anywhere in 
India at Rs. 25/- for which a new weight slab is introduced. The new tariff of 
Rs 25 for the weight slab of upto 50 grams (other than local articles) will be 
inclusive of Service tax and educational cess, irrespective of the distance 
involved. However, the rates for the Speed Post for ‘Local’ remains unaltered. 
As per the existing rates, letters upto 200 gms. were charged Rs. 50/-. The new 
Speed Post tariff scheme 'One India One Rate' comes into effect from today.

Speed Post was started by Department of Posts in August 1986 with a view to 
provide time-bound and express delivery of letters and parcels to the 
customers. In the past 20 years it continues to be the market leader in the 
express industry During 2005-06, Speed Post revenue crossed Rs 408 crore and in 
the current year, the Department has targeted Speed Post revenue of Rs 500 
crore. It was on 10th September 2001, Speed Post rates were restructured and it 
gave a new momentum to our business.
