Kevin could have well made his point without the (usual) demagoguery of
religion (see below).
The reason why science progresses is because science is willing to change based
on scientific proof and data.
Unfortunately religion, given its nature, does not lend itself to
experimentation and data collection.
Similarly English literature does not lend itself to scientific proof and data
collection. Or else many of us would fail.
So we have to accept every field for its contribution as well as its
limitations. If we do not accept that, the miss-judgements are our own.

Many "so called" scientists in spite of their pious pronouncements do not
change even in face of scientific data; and are stuck in their rigid and / or
old ways. In fact in such situations, they may misuse science.
We see this commonly in medicine, where 54% of medical practice in the USA is
termed inappropriate.
This was the recent Rand Study which looked at over-utilization,
under-utilization and miss-utilization in the practice of medicine.

This is likely to be even higher in countries which do not undertake these
studies; or where there no technology, medicines or expertise available to
practice the current standard of "Scientific Evidence-Based" medicine.

If we are to learn from the past, scientists SHOULD NOT be the high priests of
science; and make / treat science as a religion. Many fall off their pedestal
during or soon after their lifetime.
Kind Regards, GL

Not to belabour the point, whenever someone mentions 'Science as a religion' I
take exception and wish to make it quite clear that until a few hundred years
ago, organized religion assumed dominion over every aspect of life, including
science and scientific discoveries. We are lucky that that is no longer the
case.

Giants of independent thought like Einstein and Hawking would never have had a
chance to expound on their views and leave us with their incredible insights
had we not got away from the clutches of the Church.
