Plenty of rethinking is being done all the time. But all of it is, by necessity, dependent on following the scientific method, involving testing of hypotheses inspired by synthesis of pre-existing objective facts, and validated or refuted by newly discovered objective facts. > >I think Gilbert did an interesting expose -- from a >field of his specialisation -- to explain how we can >be caught in a time-warp and still feel very >sanctimonous about it.... > Sorry, I disagree. I think each person is interpreting what Gilbert wrote according to his own whims and fancies. Gilbert's post is like the Rorschach test. > >It might not be unrealistic to say that "modern >medicine" is, at best, a changing field of knowledge. > Precisely and appropriately so. But grandmother's kaanneo do not change. That is why it is ridiculous to try to or pretend to use modern medicine or science to validate grandmother's kaanneo. Regarding the rest of Frederick's post, I agree that the excesses of medical professionals, scientists, journalists, pharmaceutical industry, unregulated alternative medical and health food industries, and the various special interest lobbies, need to be exposed. But I think any well-informed and self-educated individual, irrespective of his/her area of specialization, might prove himself to be competent enough to expose these excesses and to question any expert.
