Dear Alick, Was reading Dr Giese's article your first encounter with what Goa has become? In which case I am saddened, for obviously you left your home in Baga some years ago, perhaps many years ago, and hope to return to it exactly as you left it.
Goa and Goans in Goa in the meantime have had to deal with the grisly reality of their situation. They are battling a dilapidated infrastructure, lack of adequate health-care facilities, a faltering educational system and worst of all a corrupt polity. Amidst all of this, they have to sustain their livelihood, raise children and retain some modicum of dignity. The fact that they do this despite their Inconvenient Truths is to their credit. We bemoan the loss of heritage but do we fund any conservation and restoration of it? Goans in Goa wanting to do something have to go to institutions like the Fundacao Oriente. What a shame for us. Others turn their houses into Bed & Breakfasts or sublets to eke a livelihood from the tourist trade. Yet others, sell their property to builders and hotel chains, to perhaps fund educational or job opportunities for their children. We decry the loss of jobs to out-of-state Indians but have we funded any educational institutions or projects or poly techs to improve upon the skill set of our Goan youth? Those who don't secure the marks to land in a professional college have little option other than to join ships or go to the Gulf. This vacuum leaves jobs open to anyone willing to fill them. We rant about the corruption in all quarters but have we taken an interest in the politics of Goa? Even in diaspora we could have shaped the political destiny of Goans by funding campaigns, supporting responsible press, by bringing international focus on incidents that are gross violations of civil and human rights (such as the communal riots and pedophilia) but instead we do nothing. Mr A Carvalho, if indeed this is the first time you have heard of Goa's ailments, I urge you to remain in Flushing NY for Goa needs our support not our scorn and condescension.
