yours fellow Goan Stephen fernandes Muscat Alva asks Churchill to call off Sept 23 meet Panaji, Sept 13: The Congress high command has taken serious note of the defiant moves of South Goa Member of Parliament, Mr Churchill Alemao, and directed him not to go ahead with planned meeting on September 23. According to highly placed sources in the party, Mr Alemao has been asked by all-India Congress committee secretary in-charge, Ms Margaret Alva to call off the meeting planned by him. The Congress sources further said that the South Goa MP has been told not to use party fora in order to carry out his personal agenda and refrain from making uncalled criticism of the local party leaders. Local leaders have again complained to the partys central leadership about the outburst of Mr Alemao against local Congress leaders and called upon the AICC to take immediate action against him. The sources said that Mr Alemao has been using party fora for his personal agenda and was criticising the local leaders in order to force them to grant him favours. Mr Alemao has been using these tactics once too often and has managed to get his work done in the past. However, the Congress sources said that local party leadership now feels that it has had enough of Mr Alemao and want that he should be dealt with firmly before he causes more damage to the party and bring more disrepute to it by his open defiance. The local leadership also feels that time has come that he is disciplined before party workers feel that he is indispensable and start dancing to his tunes, giving rise to more indiscipline in the party, which the party cannot afford with assembly elections just a few months away. The local leaders are now hopeful that Mr Alemao will not be allowed to escape this time and that party leadership will take appropriate action against him, so as to send message to all that indiscipline in any form will not be tolerated from anyone however powerful they may be. The sources further said that as a first step at disciplining Mr Alemao, he could be divested of all the responsibilities within the party wing. They also said that party would not suspend him but would seek his voluntary resignation from the party as well as the Parliament, if he fails to obey the party leadership orders. Meanwhile, there is growing disenchantment in the Congress over the moves of Nationalist Congress Party leadership to poach into its strongholds. Some Congress legislators have taken strong objections to the recent moves by the state NCP to create its bases in their constituencies, which they feel is against the principles of coalition rule. These legislators want party to decide on the issue of having coalition straight away and not wait till the elections are announced, saying that last-minute changes could cost them the victory in elections. They also said that they were wary of the motives of the local NCP leadership to make unilateral declaration of contesting from at least 10 seats as a coalition partner of the Congress. They further said that local NCP leadership cannot be trusted upon and that decision on having alliance for the future should be firmed up as early as possible so as to avoid the situation similar to that in the last assembly elections. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
