The author of this article that ran in the Toronto Star of Dec 12, 1985 is a man after my own heart.
Strong-willed and outspoken female posters of Goanet including but not restricted to Selma, Helga, Filomena et al, please note. THREE THINGS FOR EVERY WOMAN TO CONSIDER 1. A determination which is to possess all the characteristics of a Christian resolution to realize the utter change in her position from that of a queen on a throne, who has voluntarily abdicated in favor of another soverign, with whom she is indeed to have the most intimate relations, but so far as her power is concerned, as an influencer by her life and example, and her wisdom, which she should instinctively know is different from the wisdom of a man. 2. A happy resignation, without stint or reserve of herself and all that she has to her lord - for so she is to regard him, or no marriage should be contract - should surround her like an atmosphere, so that her husband may never catch a breath of self-will. And, in deporting herself thus, she is never to assume the manner of injured innocence or that of surprise and disappointment at the change in their relationships after, as compared with before marriage, when the lover was ever at her beck and ready to do her bidding. . Her life in her new position must be cheerily, all the day, and even if dark clouds would lower she must make it appear that the sun still shines. In a word she should live for her husband, for either he literally toils for her, or, under any circumstances, bears the brunt of life's burden and ought to do so. 3. Lastly, a sweet devotion which does not manifest itself as though it expected something in return, but full hearty and spontaneous, should be the keynote of her soul. Such a course will compel, if the man is heavy and wanting in magnanimity of soul; and if not, he is of a noble nature, there will burst forth a torrent of devotion and tender care on his part, even stronger than her own, and whether it is amiable or not, will brook no control, no cease while life lasts. Thus will their lives blend - "The twain shall be one flesh," and the glory of all we conceive, as truly woman, will envelop her sweet life as with a halo." (The author continues) I read the above to a young lady and to my surprise she said: " I agree with you. That is the way to produce happiness in married life." And then with an arch sweetness of manner, she added: " I can put all that into three words: The wife should 'study to please'." _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [email protected] http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
