Dears,
Why do we find CHAUVINISTS among the ILL-INFORMED? Language is a means of
communication between two persons and/or groups of persons. Language is for
UNDERSTANDING each other, NOT for intentional misunderstanding.
Breadfruit is NIRponos in Konkani. The word NIR indicates the negative as in
NIRontor [endless], NIRfol [unfruitful] NIRmol[invaluable; unblemished]. Goans
were familiar with the Jack fruit ['Jakka' is a Malayalam word adopted by the
Portuguese sailors as 'Jaca' and corrupted by the British as 'Jack'] which is
native to India. The Breadfruit is of West Indies origin. It was not known to
the people in Goa till the Portuguese brought it here. It looked like a PONOS
[Jack] but it was NOT the same. Hence it was called 'nirPONOS'.
Palponos is a word that finds its origin either in the Lizard-like [Pal]
appearance of the male inflorescence or, more likely, is a corruption of the
name PATHPONOS [Laxmanphal or Soursop] that looks like the Breadfruit but
tastes more like a sour Custard Apple.

Dr. Carmo is absolutely right. the word PONOS [Jack] is not to be confused
with ONOS [Pineapple]. Those who have a slightly stronger Portuguese influence
on their Konkani call the Onos as Annanas or use the Marathicised 'Anas'
In any case Salcete is part of the "Old Conquest" and became a part of
colonial Goa in 1545 A.D.; just two years after Bardez. Goa , whether one
likes it or lumps it, is a creation of the Portuguese colonialists from the
Kingdoms of Bijapur, Sunda and Sawantwadi.
It would be nice if more people tried to INFORM as Joe Goa UK is doing on
many net groups, or at least bother to CHECK before they post wrong information
on the Net.
I say this being a proud BARDEZKAR, not a Morador or a Bhailo, but a GAUNKAR
who is proud to speak Konkani on any forum as it is my Mai Bhas.
Bab-re, Nirponsak "sheee" mhonntai zalear dhu ani kha!
