Talking Photos: Kashtti/Langutti/Potonnem & Munj

..in support of the ongoing debate on goanet

Conversation between a young (18) and JoeGoaUk (61)

You youngsters of today may have never seen or heard of Kastti or langotti or
potonnem

So, what is kashtti ?
In simple words, it is a type of men's underwear worn or seen wearing until
1980s (mind you,
it is still worn in rural Goa/India).

They say, there has never been perfect alternative to 'Potonnem' or 'Kastti'
yet.

So, what is Kashtti made up of or what is looks like ?
Well, it is sort of a large cotton handkerchief say 60cmsx50cms size (usually
red).

Handkerchief ? How it is worn then ?
Well, those days all men used to wear a sort of thread around their waste
called 'Munj' and
this helped to tightly secure the Kashtti.

See pics (our C D Silva also seen wearing it)

Oh! I see. You seems to have pretty good knowledge of Kashtti, did you wear
one ?
How dare you!! (Antamchea bhurgeamkodde konn pasience kaddtolo ?)
Fyi, No, As far as I remember, under wears were available in the market during
my time and we
could well afford to buy it.

'Munj' ? what is munj ?

A-re baba, I just told you it is a sort of long lasting thread usually bought
from 'Festa Feri
Perniemkodde' the one who sell 'killkille, baulim etc' in local fair and city
markets.
That 'Munj' was even worn by youngsters and kids -This is because I think to
tie some medicine
or religius 'taz' or 'Tauz' usually hindus. Young kids were seen with 'dontam
pottolli' tied
around their waist and neck. Nodrechi or dhisttichi 'Hoddki', lingttea pana
pottolli for
'dont' (round worms?), dontamche munne, Anxela Kens or nakutt etc etc also seen
tied around
the children's waist.

This lecture on "munj" I gave to my students exactly one year ago..
Adults may have used the 'Munj' primarily to secure Kashtti and is common even
now with
Kharvies, Renders etc

That 'Munj' is/was not just worn by Hindus, kunbis, Render or Bamonns.
I remember wearing it too. Infact, all other boys of my age and elders had it.
I am neither Hindu nor Kharvi nor Kunnbi nor Render nor Bammon.
But Some top kharvi like Raponnkars even had it of thick metal steel/silver
(chain).

Adults or older people may have worn it to secure their Kastti or potonnem or
langotti but
don't know why boys wear it, may be it was just a tradition or may be to secure
our 'ched'di'
or 'kalsao'. I remember wearing it (Munj) even in late 80s

This may give you some more idea..
