Folks, Notwithstanding the numerous congratulatory messages and local newspaper coverage, I Iook forward to the annual Fama with some trepidation. This is because it causes great local nuisance and disturbs the common good. Heres the reason why: 1. A huge posse of police is posted everyday for 7 days to control traffic in the approaches to Colva. This is a waste of essential manpower, which is disrupted from carrying out their normal traffic duties in Salcette. The police is already in short supply, and is thereby wasted in association with conduct of a religious festival. 2. A huge number of stalls are erected on both sides of the main road, disrupting traffic, and disturbing the local residents. These stalls are mostly set up by outsiders, sell junk, and sometimes kept running for days and weeks after the festival is over. I dont know as to who pockets the hire charges for these illegal stalls. 3. A massive amount of garbage is generated on both sides of the road. No dustbins are placed, nor garbage cleared for days after the FAMA is over. As it is Colva is turning into a pigsty, and this makes it worse, just when the foreign tourists are flying in.
This , incidentally, is happening all over Goa in connection with festivals. The stalls erected for the Holy Spirit festival at Margao were kept running for as much as 15 days after all the singing and dancing was over! The municipal guys must be having deep pockets. I think its high time we Goans had a rethink about the conduct of religious festivals. They are running out of control, and disrupting our normal way of life. regards, Gilbert Menezes. > Message: 4 > Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2006 21:22:24 -0400 > From: "Goa's Pride Goa-World.Com" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: [Goanet] COLVA FAMA Today / Greetings from Colva United > Centre-Kuwait > To: <[email protected]> > Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; > reply-type=original > > COLVA FAMA TODAY: > > The President, Committee Members and Members of Colva United Centre-Kuwait > greets all fellow Colva villagers/parishioners and Goans in Kuwait and > worldwide on this auspicious occasion. > _______________________________________________ Goanet mailing list [email protected] http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
