The President of India Rashtrapati Bhawan New Delhi Subject: Corrupt custom official- Mr. Sahay at Mumbai CST Airport His Excellency, After working hard for one year in Dubai, I was returning to India with my wife on my annual leave and also to celebrate Ganesh Festival in Goa. I was carrying computer costing AED 1,800 (equivalent of Rs 22,500-tax free up to Rs 25,000) for my son who is studying in VIII standard in Goa When we reached Mumbai airport on 20 August at 6 am, Mr. Sahay who was at the custom counter took me aside and told me to pay custom duty of Rs 2,000.When I showed him the invoice that I carried with me (knowing this corrupt custom officials) and I told him that computer value is below permissible tax free allowance of Rs 25,000.He replied that we have our own valuation and that you will have to pay Rs 2,000 or pay AED 100. I refused to pay him the bribe demanded of AED 100, he would not listen he made us wait there for 20 minutes. I told him that we work hard in Dubai and it is not easy money the way u r making here wearing this uniform. Then I saw his daughter photo on his mobile. I told him that u r lucky that your small daughter is with you. I brought this computer for my son who is staying alone with his Nanee. Only after that he let me go. My appeal is to install CCTV at Airport near Custom Clearance counter, which should also be relayed live for public viewing outside the Airport. Increase custom duty free baggage allowance to Rs 50,000 for NRI's.
