Well said Fr.J. Loiola Pereira. Indeed, vocation promotion should be for
priesthood - never for mitres and red hats. We also cannot be parochial
about our Bishops any more than a Chief Minister of Goa can be claimed to
represent Poriem or Saligao or Navelim or our Governors claimed to represent
Nagaland or Madhya Pradesh or UP or WB. A Bishop is the representative of
the Pope in his diocese.
I have had the privilege of knowing Fr. Lucio da Viega Coutinho and Fr.
Amandio Valladares [both Sahashti-kars] and Fr. Antonio Filipe Pais and Fr.
Filipe Neri Ferrao [both Bardezkars] ...and have seen that they were
followers of the Jersus Christ, the one who was crucified for being correct,
good and righteous. Their backgrounds or native villages do not really
matter. Jesus, if he was born today, would be dubbed a Palestinian son of a
carpenter!
I dare say, I would have preferred to have Fr. Filipe Neri Ferrao to
remain the simple, honest, humble and uncomplicated priest I once knew. The
"mitres and red hat" has changed most of that as far as I can see. Those
great qualities of Christ that Fr. Filipe Neri Ferrao has in him, still peep
through the protocol and diplomacy of his office....like the sun shining
through during monsoons. One can, of course, be both a bishop and a good
Christian...though it is much more difficult to live on a pedestal than on
terra firma.
It was a touching homily that Fr.Vasco do Rego preached at the last rites
of Fr. Antonio Filipe Pais. I hope everyone has heard it and remembers it.
The spirit of service, and the faith in Christ that gives rise tio the
service, is all that really matters. For sceptre and crown, will come
tumbling down....and to what use is a bishopric if one can not even save
one's own soul?
Viva Goa.
Miguel
