Sad to learn about Deryk. As a child I watch both brothers Neville and Deryk strike a formidable combination for Caltex. On many occasions, Deryk sent in neat crosses from the wings for Neville to score in his typical fashion -- a deft placement or a soft drive. Deryk had a rasping shot, scoring from narrow angles. >From Caltex to Mafatlal, Deryk continued to show his class with speed and control. The bespectacled player was a feared forward that defences found hard to keei in check. Two years ago I bumped into him at a ground. I asked him if he was still coaching. He replied in a raised voice that he was and how come I didn't know. I told him that I don't live in Mumbai but migrated to Canada more than two decades ago. In a polite way, he said that no wonder he never saw me. Unlike Neville, Deryk was not a conversationalist. Both brother had different styles of play and temperament. Deryk was head-strong while Neville was a cool cat. While Neville could outwink his opponent with dribbles, Deryk would zoom past his rival with speed. It thrilled their father Jose's hearth to see his sons play great football at the Cooperage, national and international level. As some of you will know, Jose's father and sportswriter Leyland de Sousa's father were brothers. Right now I forget Leyland's father name but he was president of one of the founders of Lusitanians and, I think, later its president. I doubt Deryk was as great a coach as he was a player. Neville too coached, but I think at the school level. Once I asked Neville why he didn't get his NIS coaching certificate. And he replied that the certificate would be given by a India player (forget) who was chief coach at NIS Patiala and that he and this player played together for India. Neville added that it was he who feed balls to this player to score goals. He thought it was below him to undergo coaching lessons under this player and also to have a certificate signed by him. These two sons of Assagoa did Goa and India proud.
