Dear Sachin, I don't think there are any women on Goanet and as the last surviving member of that now nearly extinct species, let me give you my opinion.
I don't know what the reasoning behind a possible ban on the saree is, in Holland. I can only guess what the motives are. There is, and this was eventually bound to happen, almost a xenophobia about all this eastern at the moment in the West. Can you blame them? Their people are taken hostage, tortured and executed with swords and then displayed on television. There are fatwas issued on film producers, journalists, cartoonists and anyone else deemed unpalatable by the self-proclaimed guardians of Asian (Muslim) culture. Their embassies are desecrated and effigies of their politicians burned at the slightest pretext be it a cartoon or a misguided statement. In was only a matter of time before the West would become intolerant of things eastern and the blurred distinction that comes with geography has no bearing on them. If Holland wants to ban the saree because it see this as being at tangent with their own culture, it is their prerogative. Just as it is our prerogative to tell them to cover up while sunbathing on our beaches.
