Gilbert,
My guess is that the walking stick concealed a weapon.
My grandfather had one with a sword in it. The idea
was that if a bandit tried to rob him, he would raise
the stick and try to hit the bandit in a slow motion.
When the bandit tried to stop the hit, the owner would
neatly pull the stick away leaving the bandit with a
casing and the owner with a sword.

Perhaps, but when I get my stick, I will cut notches
into it. One notch for each house I own.

That's because the third use for a walking stick was
to fend off the snakes (in Goa) or a stray dog in the
USA.
