A valid point that modern Goans should know a little more than the name and
village of the "Great Men Of Goa". Knowing the legacy (achievement) of the
Goan is likely to stimulate a next generation Goan to explore the same /
similar path and advance the understanding further. This would be a direct
recognition of and a compliment to the "famous Goan" who preceded him / her.
The (Vithalrao Nagesh) Shirodkar's operation / knot / suture involved the
placement of a purse-string stitch / suture around an incompetent cervical os
(neck of the womb). This was done in an attempt to stop the repeated
miscarriages and premature onset of labor, in women who suffered from this
condition. The suture is removed prior to delivery.
The principle is not-dissimilar to a lady tying / tightening the purse-string
of her purse to prevent the contents from falling out.
