To Filomena's excellent post below, I would like to add than Jorge Noronha
(Lisbon) joined us in
April 2000 during our first trip to the Vatican when we met Cardinal Saraiva
Martins (who is
Prefect and heads the Congregation for Saints, in 2000 he was Archbishop).
During our second trip
to the Vatican in June 2000, Fr. Roger Lesser (an English priest who lives in
Rajasthan and has
written on Saints in India) joined us. I was not able to make the third trip
that Filomena took
that year to the Vatican in Oct 2000 when Archbishop Henry D'Souza of Calcutta
made that
courageous and memorable speech in Rome pointing out European bias in the
Church. All three of the
visits were co-ordinated by Denver Pinto who was based in Rome and who then
headed the Indian
Priests and Nuns union. We were well supported by Sri Lankan, Indian (Goan)
laity, priests and
nuns in the Rome community. But across the Board we were told that the Goa
Archdiocese's office
needed to take the lead and push for Goan saints, something I do not feel they
have done. This
sadly reflects a Goan mentality - we find it easier to be followers than
leaders and we seem to
favor Westerners (white skin) over our own people.

Regards,
George
