Dear Vidyahar,

There is currently an ad appearing on American
television, which I love. An African-American man
discovers by chance, an Indian video clip on the
internet. He stares at it for a couple of seconds,
with a "what the dickens" look on his face. After that
he starts dancing to it.

Given the cultural naivety and insularity of
Americans, this ad is a major leap but more than that
it speaks to the greater phenomenon of world-wide
cultural assimilation. Because of the information
flow, societies are going to chose from a myriad of
cultures what they want to adopt and discard.

As a human resource person, I can attest to the fact
that we are most likely to hire those that resemble us
in some way. As a new generation of Indians, raised on
a Indo-European fusion of everything from music, to
dress to food, take over as captains of industry,
Indians within India itself will be called upon to
embrace a new culture and assimilate into it.

Just a few thoughts on the evolutionary nature of
cultures and assimilation.
