Hi Gilbert
Many thanks for such an interesting story re the origins of "the Goan crab
mentality." I had not heard this story before.
I must ask my Goan UK friends, whom I knew well in Kenya, how much of the
"Goan crab mentality" they encountered in the past? As to the UK, we have
become fairly 'privatised' by virtue of custom among the Brits, and by and
large, few would have any idea about what any other Goan was up to and
hardly care in any case! Moreover, younger Goans would probably be clueless
about the term and its meaning. I suspect that the same would apply to your
neck of the woods.
All this has got me thinking whether close physical proximity among Goans,
accentuates the crab mentality that we are talking about. I would seek
Gabe's and Eddie's views about the crab mentality among the Goans in the UK
whilst accepting that there is no doubt that, intensely argumentative and
divisive Goans are to be found in any group especially at the social club
level. I know this is true wherever there are sizeable numbers of Goans
outside Goa who can easily meet in Mumbai, London, Melbourne, Sydney,
Toronto, Nairobi etc but I am not sure that this kind of tension at club
level is the same as the crab mentality we are talking about---or maybe it
is, but expressed differently! However, I think I'd like to explore this
issue much more and hope there will be more responses, like yours and
Selma's, to my original question about "the Goan crab mentality."
Regards
Cornel
PS Pardon me being naive at times but what does your term "suprulo" mean?

Subject: [Goanet] The Goan crab mentality!
> Hi Cornel,
> The term "Goan crab mentality", I am told, stems from the story of a Goan
> fisherman having gone to the market with a basket of live crabs. At the
> fish market, he kept the basket open.
> A suprulo tourist asked him why does he not cover the basket, as the
> active and energetic crabs could easily crawl out of the basket.
> The experienced fisherman replied, "These are Goan crabs. When any crab
> climbs up to get out of the basket, the other crabs will definitely catch
> it and pull it back to the bottom of the basket."
> Now you know the origin of the Goan saying.
> Now in your worldwide travel and encounters with Goans, would you validate
> this saying?
> Kind Regards, GL
