Many thanks for your helpful explanation of the term "Goan crab mentality."
However, if we can go beyond the analogy, why, I wonder, do the Goans have
rather plentiful of this mentality unlike say the Brits who have never been
short of crabs with so much shoreline! Do Hindu Goans have it? Is the
mentality driven by religion, caste or sheer competitiveness for limited
resources such as work, money, consumables, status, qualifications etc?
Still being a wee bit curious that's all!

PS Selma's point that this mentality is to be found among other South Asian
communities is interesting but is it to be found inland where there are not
that many crabs except in ponds and lakes perhaps, and many people have
never seen the sea?
