ALERT!! Animal Violation in South Goa by the Forest Dept!!
Dear Goanetters! Thanks to timely action of 3 WildGoans, and Paresh, working at the forest department, on 30th December 2006, 1 python, 2 mongoose and 1 palm civet was rescued from a crib site at Aquem, Margao. The animals were in a really bad state, dehydrated after days in the sun and open, and were being fed ice cream, biscuits and other junk food!! There's more details on page 2, Herald, Saturday edition. This was just the tip of the iceberg, with another crib housing 4-5 juvenile crocodiles and pythons.all of which are in a bad state since they are exposed to the elements HOWEVER TODAY..... In a startling and shocking development, we've found out that the very same python, (a Schedule - I Animal) that was confiscated by the forest department a few days ago is now back where it was found, in the cage on display at the crib!!! In a picture taken by a friend yesterday (1st Jan 2007), even the sack taken by the forest department(with pink and green markings) is back in the enclosure, proving that it is the same snake. On enquiry, it was found that no Python, nor palm civet nor mongoose was received at Bondla. While we know the fate of the python, where are the rest of the animals?? Perhaps the Margao RFO, Mr. Dessai should be asked this question since he was present during the confiscation. And while the forest department chooses to ignore the matter, some more animals including a crocodile are languishing away in another crib at Raia. It's at times like this that one wonders what is the use of protecting wildlife when the people paid to do this do the exact opposite. I and the other wildgoans that got involved last time can't get involved again, as we've already been marked by the crib organizers. Is there any solution? Any concrete help or suggestions will be MOST appreciated.
