For those interested in the history of Dom Manuel II, please read
Wikipedia's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_II_of_Portugal.

As the last king of Portugal, it would interest history buffs to know
the following which I have translated (with the help of Babelfish)
from another site.

He was born on the 15th of November 1886, the second son of King
Carlos I and Queen Amélia de Bragança. Called to the regency due to a
tragedy that befell it, stealing the life of his father and his older
brother, prince Luiz Filipe, he was acclaimed king on the 6th of May
of 1908. But his reign was short and tragic, as on 3rd October 1910,
the republican revolution broke out, which finished with the
announcement of a new regime, on 5th October. This date marks the coup
d'etat putting to an end the four centuries of reign of the Dynasty of
Bragança - brought into being by the Portuguese aristocracy in 1640
through Dom João IV (two of its descendants had been Emperors of
Brazil). With the end of the monarchy, a Portuguese Republic was
proclaimed. Dom Manuel II together with all his family was expatriated
to England. In that country, Dom Manuel married German princess Dona
Augusta Victoria, granddaughter of Leopold of Hohenzollern. He died on
2nd July 1932, and his body repatriated to Portugal on board the
English cruiser "Concord" resting in the Real Panteon in Sao Vicente,
as was his desire.

My grandfather, it looks like, was a closet monarchist though he must
have been the most jolly monarchist I have ever known, more interested
in the collection of artifacts he brought home to Goa from all parts
of the world than in who ruled him (which was of course my
grandmother).

Don't know where the gate is but the heraldry is of Dom Manuel
Segundo, Rei de Portugal. A photograph of him in full regalia and his
court of arms hung over the dining table in my father's house in
Assagao. I was told it was put there by my grandfather Hipolito
Crisologo Francisco, although I did not learn why or how it came by.
