Dear Friends
The sound of brass band would make every one stop to listen. Whether it be
weddings, funerals,or feast day there would be a brass band. The band for
the wedding was made of two saxs, one trumpet, a violin, a guitar or a
banjo, and drums. No mikes. The singer had to strain his voice to be heard.
Of course the wedding halls were small and most of the time it was held
under a" matto" of palm leaves. The weddings were held in the afternoons.
Very rarely it was a night affair. The feast day began with alvorad
consisting of brass band and reed instruments. The saxs, the trumpets, the
trombones, the french horns, the clarinets, drum were used for this band
which had around 14 to 21 musicians depending on the person who is
celebrating the feast. Today the instruments are replaced with string
instruments and synchronised organs and guitars but it does not produce the
same effect. A real orchestra was made of 9 to 27 violins, two saxs (alto
and tenor) one organ, sometimes trombone, base guitar, rythm guitar,
etc.Sometimes viola, celo were used. Sometimes six trumpets and six
saxophones were used. All depended on the music arranger and composer.
