Hi Paulo,
Five hundred years later, with no Portuguese dictatorship, let us acknowledge
the facts. Before the Portuguese used force and conquered Goa, it was a small
part of a country with its capital in Bijapur. Goa has for million of years
been part of the Asian - Indian subcontinent ... and never been, even remotely,
part of Portugal or Europe. Is a Portuguese conquered Goa free, but not an
Indian conquered Goa?
I think your quarrel on semantics has / can / will continue ad infinitum.
Personally I do not care what choice of words you and others select. These
semantics are ALL CORRECT and non-exclusive. The emphasis depends on which
corner one stood and what view one observed about the same event in history.
This was simplified for you in the example of the daughter being kidnapped and
re-kidnapped. Sorry you did not read and understand what I wrote.
You missed the punch line that the girl could have / should have been smart!
If Goans were smart, we would have shaped our own history - pre-, during-, and
post-1961. So can we learn from history and be smart and united? Is that
being ridiculous? A plain reading of English would find no dichotomy in the
terms. Yet from Goan perspective, these individual words are code phrases that
are significant to some and totally meaningless to most.
As I read your writings, the fidalgos of Goa slept before and after 1961 ....
and have not yet stopped crying over spilt milk. All I can say is it is never
too late for you and a handful of others to wake up and move on!
While you are arguing about Goa 50 years ago, the recent India Abroad reports
that India will introduce 50 new-model cars this year, its growth rate in car
sales has been 20% per year and Goa may become the Las Vegas of India. Perhaps
Goans today should learn from the Macauans. The National Business Report in USA
is reporting the New York's Wall Street stock exchange and Goldman Sachs is
going to buy a 5% stake (each) in the Mumbai stock exchange, which has been the
fastest growing stock exchange in the world.
Kind Regards, GL

Gilbert, do not be ridiculous! I see your point but it is a ridiculous
argument used by those who have been completely brainwashed and who want
everyone to think that Goa was part of India before the Portuguese times.
Having said all this as above, to what extent can this be remotely compared to
the case of a daughter being kidnapped by someone?
I do not know about you all, but I expected something better constructed coming
from Gilbert. His example not only is ridiculous and tremendously naive, it is
also childish to say the least! But this is most typical of the brainwashed
type!
Yours truly disappointed... Paulo Colaco Dias
