HERALD CORRESPONDENT
QUEPEM, JAN 15 - Councillors of Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) attending a
public meeting on the Regional Plan 2011 were caught off guard when they were
asked to justify a proposed housing project at Sirvoi-Quepem.
During the meeting, Ajay Pereira of the Quepem Civic and Consumer Forum raised
the issue of a proposed housing project at Sirvoi worth crores of rupees and
sought to know if the councillors were aware of the project.
The councillors initially claimed they were unaware of the proposed project,
but councillor Rahul Pereira admitted that the QMC had issued a licence to the
project. He, however, defended other councillors by alleging that the chief
officer and the municipal engineer had granted the licence without placing the
matter before the council.
During the meeting, Dr Oscar Rebello, convenor of Goa Bachao Abiyan appealed to
the people to attend the meeting at Lohia Maidan, Margao, in large numbers on
January 16.
In his speech, Sridar Kamat claimed that all 40 MLAs were involved in the
Regional Plan, since none of them came out openly to oppose the Plan.
Fr Michael Rebello warned that if the government did not scrap the
controversial Regional Plan, the people of Goa would scrap them in the next
assembly polls. He claimed that the Congress government had plans to sell Goa
to the outsiders.
Quepem Councillor and NCP leader Rahul Pereira fully supported the Goa Abiyan
and accused NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Wilfred Dsouza of being
the Regional plan.
Others who addressed the meeting included Ajay Pereira, Councillor Narayan
Gaonkar, Prof Martin Menino Fernandes and Kalidas Dessai, while those attending
the meet included GBA Co-Convenor Patricia pinto, ZP Member Subash Fall Dessai
and a large number of villagers.
Earlier, an exhibition of the different site maps regarding the Regional Plan
was displayed at the venue.
