There has been a surge in the number of beggars
in Panjim and elsewhere in Goa in recent times.
Many of these 'new' beggars are old ladies,
positioned strategically at street corners, which
lead me to suspect there was some sort of a
racket in place. But now I learn that word is
out in the impoverished areas of India that
begging is a relatively lucrative proposition in
Goa. So people are moving here en masse to beg.
A friend encountered an indigent 75 year old
from the Anantapur district of AP the other day.
Just imagine - a man at 75 moving to Goa to beg.
Uncouth Dilliwalas are coming here in droves to
buy houses and land. Migrant labour is coursing
in to service the construction boom. Beggars
are attracted by the 100-odd rupees that can
be made in a day here.
Goa is cooked if Goans don't get their act
together.
