We celebrate the feast of any saint to learn about his or her life and to make our lives as theirs. Sitting in the bars and drinking is not a part of any feast. That is actually what is happening in Goa . We celebrate one thousand feasts, and what is going down our throat is a drink in large quantities spoiling our physical health, mental and spiritual also. Why blame Parrikar ? The church itself has made this rule not to serve liquor for funnerals, or when having a party in the church hall etc. Parikar did the right thing. Gulping down liquor in large quantities is not a part of any feast. We go to church to pray and ask God to rid us of paganism, greed, anger, etc Dear Ana Maria, I agree with you 100% that alcohol (esp in non-moderate amounts) is harmful to the individual and his/her family. It is also harmful to others if one drinks and drives or (say) one drinks and becomes disorderly in public. But this is not about alcohol, is it? If it was, there would be NO alcohol at these IFFY-JIFFY wastes of time, at these Stink Fests, at Election Rallies and at all the noise and garbage creating messes which invade Goa every Christmas and New Year. The issues, I submit to you is the following: WHO decides what is good or not good for an adult human being with mental capacity - as long as he/she does not interfere with another? Is it the Gorrment? All a Gorrment can legally do is enforce the law if anyone violates it. What will the Govt decide to do NEXT? Organise to conduct the so-called 'Potency Test' on anyone who drinks alcohol? And the Docs can agree to go along because the 'investigation agencies demand it'? Did Jindal really say that? How different are they (I ask) from those British docs who subjected Indian and Pakistani women to virginyty tests at Heathrow airport in the 1970s? http://asiancorrespondent.com/54117/humiliating-%E2%80%98virginity-tests%E2%80%99-at-heathrow-revealed/ or the Nazi doctors who were just 'following orders'? http://www.auschwitz.dk/doctors.htm There is a famous saying by a British Justice, Lord Reid in S v McC and M; W v W [1972] A.C. 24 at 43. He rightly cautions us thus: 'We have too often seen freedom disappear in other countries not only by coups d'état but by gradual erosion: and often it is the first step that counts. So it would be unwise to make even minor concessions'.
