As we celebrate the end of 50 yrs of Goa Legislative Assembly we should not
forget the mega role of ‘Father of Goa’s Democracy’ Mr.Roque Santana. For
450 years Portuguese dictated rule in Goa, and therefore our elders didn’t
know what was Democracy or Election and the power of voting.

Its is Mr.Roque Santana who introduced us to Democracy by objecting to
Lt.Governor’s nominations. He forced election and Democracy in Goa and
the First Goa Legislative Assembly came in to being on January 9, 1964.

He was awarded ‘Tambra Patra’ national award by Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi and He was elected twice to the Goa legislative. He was the General
Secretary of Goa Pradesh Congress committee(I) and worked hard to install
the first ever Congress (I) rule in Goa.

sincerely,

Amy.
