And Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation, in the
world (since 1290). The University of Coimbra has approximately 20,000
students, and hosts one of the largest communities of international students in
Portugal.

The quality of output of Indian institutions has much to be desired. It
appears that most, if not all, are theoreticians, not much given to practical
applications. I know at least one civil engineer who never held a tool in his
life, ‘til he came to Australia. How many engineers, bio-medical and
micro-biology graduates are working in banks and institutions un-related to
their field of study? Why?

Compare that to the Escola Medica and Escola Tecnica graduates, where emphasis
was on practice followed by the theory behind the practice. Just my thoughts.

Dear Bernado,

1: A mere three Universities appearing in the top 300 does not provide the
total picture.

2: However, it might be worth asking VM to refer us to sources he researched
before coming to the conclusion he reached with regard to Portuguese higher
education.

3: One site he may NOT have visited is this one:
https://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/sites/digital-agenda/files/Portugal%20country%20profile.pdf

4: Fifty+ years post 1961, it is quite weird to still talk about "The pathetic
quality of higher education in colonial Goa" .

5: Is VM saying that the quality of higher education (pre 1961) was
higher/lower in Ratnagiri, Savantwadi and Karwar ( areas surrounding Goa)?

6: Is it possible that VM ran out of topics to write on OR he has been unable
to tackle the subject of higher education head on ..... Without using his
favorite whipping subject?

7: Am not sure if VM is an expert on higher education (or even education) ...
But, will invite him to explain what he meant by those words.

8: I, for one, know that per capita, pre1961 (and perhaps now too) Goa produced
as many top professionals who served many parts of the world with
distinction.....as the major metropolitan areas of the subcontinent.

9: Over to VM
