Their private efforts, dedication, commitment and sacrifices are worthy of our appreciation and recognition. Both the day and residential schools provided a convenient opportunity for learners. They prepared students for the public, Govt, examination in Permeiro and Segundo Grau .These qualifications enabled the students to enter English medium schools or First year of 7 years of Lyceum at Panjim with admission test.The villagers want to revive and perpetuate their memories in gratitude, for their private intitiative, which spread literacy, promoted Education and inscribed CHINCHINIM on the educational map of Salcette, Goa
Prof. DOMINGOS ARSENIO PIEDADE De MELO He was born on 4-August. 1905 at Chinchinim and passed away on 7.November 1981..Son of Minguel de Melo /Escolastica Furtado and was married to Dona Faustina.He was ordained in the fourth grade of minor order in 29-30 September and I October 1932 at Rachol Seminary, by His Excellency, Bishop of Gurza ,Rev.. Sr. Manuel Maria Ferreira Da Silva and Auxiliary, His Excellency Rev. Sr.Theotonio Manuel Ribeiro Viera De Castro, Patriarch of India on 10-4-1933. .He was a gifted violinist too .His guiding Principles were TRUTH,GOODNESS and JUSTICE, which he steadfastly adhered to for 45 years (1933 -1978). In the year 1933 he established the" Instituto de Santo Antonio " at first in a rented premise at Permeiro Palvem and then at his residence. .He was encouraged by Fr Nazareno and Fr Degolacao and Monsignor.Minguelino Rodrigues and assisted by Dona Faustina and Dona Amelia in teaching. Students were diligently and successfully coached to appear for Permeiro and Segundo Grau. On 20 January 1958 he was authorised to open Primary School in Portuguese, ESCOLA PRIMARIA PRTICULAR de DEUSSUA. Further on 16-4 -1964, he was permitted to teach in English, Marathi, Konkani in his Portuguese Private Primary School at Deussua. After liberation in 1961 and on students completing 4 th. Standard, students were admitted at St. Bosco S, H. School at Chimnchinim. Boarding school became a necessity ,as students came from A.V.C.beisdes Benaulim, , Carmona, Varca,Colva,Majorda, Chandor and as far away from Agassaim ,Goa Velha, Velsao, Cancona, Cabo De Rama.,He also accepted fees in kind. He stressed on moral values, discipline and showed great concerns for the health and diet of the students. Mother -in- Law, Mrs Dulce Rodrigues managed the Boarding with the touch of motherly love. Many of the professionals and well placed, prominent past students like priests, doctor's engineers, and teachers had their first stint at his school. They hold get together and reminisce on good old days . The Silver Jubilee celebrations with mass and cultural programme of "Instituto de Santo Antonio" on 15 September 1959 greatly enthused him g to look back with pride and satisfaction his educational achievements of great magnitude of his times. His legacy lives on in the minds and hearts of grateful students he lived with. It is a happy coincidence that his children Zelia, late Fatima, Rudolph, late Bernadette ,Marcus, Rolland are all engaged in teaching profession donning his mantle.
