Jan Ugahi organized its Womens Day get-together on
11th March 2007 at Grace Church Hall, Margao. About
250 disadvantaged, distressed women participated in
this programme. The Domestic Violence Act 2005 was
exposed through skits prepared by the women
participants and Jan Ugahi staff. Through this, Jan
Ugahi has tried to ensure that women are made aware of
how they can access this path breaking legislation for
seeking immediate reliefs and also building a front
for advocacy of proper implementation of the Act, in
its true spirit. A hair-style competition, a skit on
the problem faced by girls in domestic labour, and an
awareness of the childrens helpline Childline,
accessible day and night by calling 1098, were the
other features of the programme that enabled the women
to affirm and celebrate their womanhood in each
others supportive company.
