Dear Roland,

While I am by no means an expert on such matters, please allow me to make a few
brief point:

1: AFMC and Escola were not contemporaries. I believe that the last Escola
students were graduating while AFMC was graduating the first batch circa
1966-7. ( Never mind when AFMC was 'established'......what is important is when
the first batch graduated)

2: Almost all the major Indian medical colleges (set up by the British) were
recognised in 1961 along with the one in Pondicherry as well as the Escola.

3: Goa Medical College ( first graduating batch circa 1968-9) had a problem
allegedly because of the IMC and Bom U 'discussion'). My understanding is that
IF the IMC had notified the UK Medical Council ...... in time .....a number of
the Goa Medical College graduates would not have had to take the PLAB exam.
Eventually, as I have previously mentioned, ALL medical graduates from India
and some other countries had their degrees 'derecognised' by the UK Medical
Council.

The sad part of it all (and I believe that Alfred Tavares is making that point)
that the degrees were recognised at a whim and without any regard to the TOP
calibre of the graduates the Escola was producing. Some of my teachers were
from the Escola, as were many of me seniors. They were Top Notch graduates from
a small sized class of students taught by very dedicated teachers with a lot of
pride in their students. I remember them being humiliated by the excercise of
having to repeat the subjects in the Condensed MBBS Course (as it was named).

Credit to them (example Dr. Francisco Colaco) for not only having undertaken
that task but also for having gone on to shake a leg with the best in the MD
exams.
