Hi Sunith,

You must keep it in perspective that We Goans are Unique ! We are the only Catholic community in the world that is Stratified ! All other Catholic communities around the world are flat i.e. everyone is equal in the eyes of God !

That gives us Goans some more challenges that other Catholic communities cannot look forward to .. like pulling down Caste barriers ! That makes our achievements all the more worthwhile and challenging !

BTW the Maharashtra Government has recently recognized the Catholic East Indian community of western India as OBC (Other Baskward Class) and the Centre has always recognized the Catholic Koli (Fisherfolk) Community of Bombay as a Scheduled Caste.
see link: http://www.eastindiansongs.com/Obc.htm

Its about time that we stake a claim for our Goan Catholic Kharvis and Kunbis for these Special Class concessions and reservations, that our Kokon-Kunbis enjoy over our Christao Kunbis ! It will also help us stuff the medical colleges and engineering colleges with more Goans - all for the Greater Glory of our beloved Goa !

Cornel,

The upper castes all over India want to keep the divide alive for obvious reasons.

India's illogical form of affirmative action(read reservations) has ensured that the erstwhile lower castes have a reason to perpetuate this ugly practice.

After all if you convert to religions that do not provide official sanction for caste such as Buddhism or Christianity, you lose the right to benefits via the reservation route. Regardless of the fact that your economic situation remains the same.

Strangely there is another group of people (mostly on this forum) who seek to keep the divide alive for no apparent reason. They are the kind who introduce words like Bamon, Chardo, Kharvi, Gulfie and Shippie into every debate. I think Selma and Carmo have a lifetime membership to this peculiar
society.

Best Regards

Sunith Velho
