World Under 8 Girls Champion Ivana Furtado started off with a win against
Ramadani Sarah of Slovenia in the first round of the World Schools Chess
Championships which got underway today in Halkidiki, Greece.
Ivana starts off as the 8th seed in this prestigious event. There are a
total of 24 participants in Ivana's category. Interestingly, both the 3rd
and 4th seeds suffered upsets in the opening round itself. Antipa Dimitra
(Greece) and Argiroudi Eleni (Greece) were beaten by Menzi Nezihe Ezgi
(Turkey) and Nikolaidou Vasiliki (Greece) respectively. Russian Utkina Arina
will be Ivana's opponent in the second round which will be played at the
same venue tomorrow.
In the Boys Under 9 Section, Karanataka's M. Satvik (ELO 1914) who is also
the top seed started his campaign with a fine victory over Marantidis
Kiriakos of Greece. India will be hoping to repeat the fine performance at
Batumi Georgia where the country bagged the maximum number of medals among
all the participating countries.
