Hmm ... I learned something new about Ted. I never knew his full name was Rafael Edward (Ted) Cruz.
Now it makes sense why he likes being called Ted - With a name like Rafael, he was probably concerned the gringos may mistake him for a Mexican carpetbaggar! I have lived in the US for some 23 years and never came across anybody referring to white US citizens as gringos. The first time I heard it was a couple of months ago on 'Narcos' - a Netflix original hit show on the life of Colombian gangster Pablo Escobar. Apparently, the Latin Americans refer to white US Americans as gringos. Jim.
