Very sensible idea. There are a number of places around the world wherein the folks have built their own Rain Water tanks with a net-cover to prevent Mosquitoes from doing their thing in the tank. I remember one in my in laws place in Bardez.
Water from pipes can have their own issues including contamination (as Wendell has rightly alluded to).
