Hi Carmo,
I was a little disappointed and saddened by your post!
All of us get cultural traits from some prior source. Goan Catholics have more
Hindu / Indian social traits than Portuguese, from whom we received our
religion. As Portuguese researchers reported, and most Goans know, only a few
Goans believed in, "Aao Portuguese". One major reason, the Inquisition was
introduced to Goa was to keep the "native Catholics" following the European
practices.
Even today, the best example of Goan Catholics retaining their Indian
traditions is the continuation of the caste system in Amchem Bangarachem Goem.
And this is just one of many practices. For other rituals at the various
milestones in a Goan life, in both communities, you may want to read our book
"Amchi Khohor (Our News) Inside Goa."
Your quote, "Eating meat every day of the week" is not a tradition, even among
other Catholics. Why would one eat meat every day when fish were "swimming" on
to our dinner plates? Meat consumption in Goan society like other societies
may be more related to economic factors. Amchi Khobor will also explain why
fish is valuable for good health, a fact that our Xamais knew well. Smart
Mauxis!
Kind Regards, GL

Although the Goan Kunbis are Catholics, they have staunch Hindu Habits like not
eating meat everyday of the week. So our Goan Kunbis follow their own religious
beliefs. Best Regards, Dr.Carmo D'Cruz, ex Velim, Goa. Now Indian Harbour
