While Quepem DySP J Nagvekar told Herald that a BJP flag and a cap were found in the vehicle, some eye-witnesses however claimed that the party items were planted inside the vehicle after the mishap. According to reports, a mini-bus proceeding towards Agonda halted near a bus stand of Saleri ward for passengers, when Anisha Pagui of Saleri tried to cross the road by walking behind the bus. The driver of the oncoming pickup, which was proceeding towards Khola, did not notice the girl and fatally knocked her down. The girl was declared dead after she was referred to the Community Health Centre at Canacona. Fearing public backlash, the driver abandoned the vehicle some 200 metres from the accident site and fled. When people learnt that the girl died on reaching the hospital, an irate crowd damaged the vehicle. Congress candidate Sanjay Bandekar and his supporters rushed to the site and claimed that the vehicle was being used by the BJP for its campaign activities. The mob also blocked the main village road for over two hours, as they demanded the presence of BJP candidate Vijay Pai Khot at the site to tender a public apology. The driver was later arrested under Sections 279, 304A and 188 IPC, as police investigations are in progress. -- FN M: 0091 9822122436 P: +91-832-240-9490 (after 1300IST) Skype: fredericknoronha Yahoochat: fredericknoronha http://fn.goa-india.org http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com Email fred at bytesforall.org Res: 784 Saligao 403511 Goa India ------------------------------------------------------- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.
