Fifty to sixty years ago this was the place everybody went to after a trip to
the Margao market.

Loja Moosa for canned provisions, Marchon’s right there in the old market for
alcohol or perhaps Casa Filu a little distance away and following that
Longuinhos for a midday beer and snacks.

The late chubby owner Elloy was on the cash counter presiding over a noisy,
dingy interior. Always used to wonder why the guy never improved his
establishment even though money was rolling in, but later on the mental pieces
fell into place when he opened a new place on Colva beach.

David’s (pronounced Daveed) was a classier place a short walking distance away,
nicely air conditioned and well kept. The hoi-polloi went to L’s and the local
blue-bloods went to D’s.

Margao was a quaint little district town then. The only traffic comprised of
Mercedes private cars and taxis, Saab, Volvo, VW Beetles and Ford Anglias.

On the drive southwards you would pass through the tracks onto Harya Bandh
which was an acess road to Navelim, Benaulim and the Catholic dominated
villages.

If you go northwards from the Jardin (garden and town plaza) to Panjim, you
would pass through narrow roads flanked by grand old landlord’s mansions in the
typical Goa-Portuguese style, getting a peek right into the hall (sala) large
enough for a wedding, with an old man rocking on a chair with the standard
overreaching armrests that were used instead for leg rests.

Panjim was always the beautiful cultural town, Margao and Mapusa merely
bustling commercial and market towns that served the Salcete and Bardez
hinterlands. The Catholic upper classes in Panjim were liberal and friendly, in
Margao they were snooty, always conscious of caste considerations, while in
Mapusa the upper classes had a much lower profile than the other two.
