------------------------------------------------------- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.casadegoa.org -------------------------------------------------------
Gabe Menezes wrote: I believe one of the reasons why Congratulatory messages are sent on public forums and ads taken out in Newspapers, is to show that the person, has close connections with the person wished. The birthday greetings to various ministers and MLA's from contractors to the PWD, from cronies and more ! The wished person revels in delight, the cronies have done their crony work and the Newspapers are laughing all the way to the Bank. === jc's comments Some other reasons: 1: Genuine well wisher, friend or school/university colleague 2: Not so Genuine a well wisher - but only one who hopes to receive something in return i.e. 'Matlabi' 3: Not so Genuine a friend - the person feted does NOT really know the alleged well wisher 4: Not so Genuine a school/university colleague e.g. so called "colleague" may have been in Kharagpur while the 'politician' may have been in Bombay - that too ...at a different time! 5: Some complex 1: Such individuals need to boast about themselves and run down others who may not have achieved the same qualification as they have. They are likely to make statements like 'Why did you not get into IIT and become an engineer?'. 6: Some complex 2: Such individuals need to be connected or known to somebody of relative notoriety or importance. I am not sure whether they feel inadequate without this alleged connection. 7: Some favours needed: i.e. PWD contract, some PR work, Some case suppressed, a Job, a consultancy etc 8: Possibly a part of an 'agenda' eg the advert placed by the 'doctors'. 9: Caste: I strongly suspect that there are Panjim Catholic 'Brahmin' Goans who will vote for a 'Brahmin' ONLY because he is a 'Brahmin'. These are the same people who will oppose the Romi script for Konkani and write letters in English to support ONLY the Devanagri script for Konkani. Intriguing, as many of these Panjim Catholic 'Brahmin' Goans don't have a clue of the Devanagri script, don't speak much Konkani and normally communicate in Portuguese or English! 10: Those who are genuinely disgusted by the corruption and chaos that has befallen Goa - and do not know what else to do. They possibly remember Salazar who was well educated and fiscally efficient even though he later became a dictator. It is possible that there are those who say ..Give us back the fiscal responsibility even if we get communalism in return. Lambert Mascarenhas once wrote ...Sorrowing Lies my Land. Possible that Ameeta is nostalgic of the sorrowing part of those days. BTW: 'When I grow up' and become a person of some minimal worth, I will stay far away from the praises or public support (if ever) of jumping jacks like high risk Aires or the uncouth and foul mouthed Carmo. jc PS: I hope that future graduates of the IITs of this world not only continue to become first class experts in their field, but also learn to be decent in their public discourse with those who may not have had the opportunity or interest in becoming IIT graduates. Ask yourself: Who would you rather have as your friend? * A highly qualified but uncouth IIT graduate or a polite cook or butler from one of the merchant ships? ------------------------------------------------------- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.
