Dear Writers, Well-wishers, Goanetters all— For sometime now on Goanet, I have often shown interest in offering my illustrative skills to Goan and Indian projects. Among my commissions, have been illustrations on poetry and stories, in a few issues of the Kyoto Journal, including for a story set on Siachen in the upcoming issue; the cover of Pirene’s Journal Silk and Spice Issue (2016); Diane Frank’s Canon for Bears and Ponderosa Pines (2018). For many years I illustrated for HIMAL Southasian, Kathmandu. I graduated from Pratt Institute; am ranked 7th Dan in Shodō; have painted murals in South America, and work in various media and approaches. My home is New York. The attachments may not come through but the links will. If that is true, anybody interested may request for this email with all attachments.
One cannot simply give away work for free (although I am way past guilty) just so it gets used someday, someplace for motivations just perhaps contrary to the original intention for which it was created. Also its harder to work for peanuts (the use of the word, pro bono has no meaning in many cases, and I know more about it then most); and as my Dad would say: Asloloi rodta ani nasloloi rodta. And Bernard was a 4th Std. burgo! Its gets worse when there is no control. Often what was surely a good piece scanned poorly, printed shabbily. But the opinion: Came out great man. KITEM?! The bottom line is how a project is offered, ideas broached, and how the artist approaches it. I illustrate from the mindset of a artist (all are artists) — a painter. The idea is to respect the writer, whether its story, poet, essay or any textual organ. The idea furthermore is not be be beholden. It can even be for articles in magazines. We are all different and rise or vanish based on the vagaries of time, affections, and plain nonchalance. A ‘good’ artist is often the writers equal. But may never be seen as such, no kudos, kaim nam… ani, hem tem! The idea on the part of publishers and writers should be to always talk. Understand the artists, see validity, seek differences and possibilities to serve ones end. And while at it understand the value of paying, recommending, forming relationships, before throwing in the nangor (anchor) for a freebee. Many of you have stellar contacts, but will not bat an eyelid. That is one strand of Goanity. Please, please no one take it personally. Smile.
