The spate of anti-Catholic sentiments expressed since
the commencement of the elections by Hindu Goans on
this forum are shocking and very disheartening. I had
always known that a divide between the two communities
existed, I had no idea that the divide was actually an
abyss of ignorance.
>From being called pro-western, anglophiles,
pro-christao, congress' vote-bank, to our priest being
all lumped together as pedophiles or sectarian
malcontents infiltrating every walk of political life,
to being accused of converting Hindus, the accusations
seem to go on unabated on a daily basis even by some
people who bear the tittle of doctor appended to their
names.
To add further insult to injury, Catholic Goans are
calling themselves Dukors, flag-waving, brainwashed,
Portugal lovers suffering from a slave mentality and
identity crisis.
So why do I even bother being Goan, when I am made to
feel ashamed of my identity as a Catholic Goan and
made to feel apologetic about my history, my religion
and my culture. I thought we were marching ahead in
Goa, together hand in hand towards the promised Land
of Secularism. Instead I find we are happily
retreating into stereotyping, hate-mongering and
living divided lives.
