The Holy Cross. Santa Cruz. This Cross you see is carried before every Sunday
mass in joyful celebration at the University chapel. So many churches and
locations and institutions are named after the Cross. A symbol of our
salvation. Once derided as a picture of punishment and banishment, it is our
glorious strength as Our Master embraced it in its totality. Once bound to it
He was committed to each one of us. So many people (martyrs in particular) have
found strength and the grace of endurance holding the Cross and gazing on it
profoundly. The 2016 film Silence shows how the Japanese authorities at the
time of religious persecution forced Christians to defame and dishonor the
Cross. Many were the faithful ones who did otherwise and went to their violent
deaths. May the Cross be our strength always.
