*All India Lawyers Union (AILU), Goa State Committee, condemns the derogatory and defamatory tirade of the Minister for Law and Judiciary of the Government of Goa Mr. Nilesh Cabral against lawyers.*
At a press conference held on Tuesday 10th November 2020, the Minister for Law and Judiciary of the Government of Goa Mr. Nilesh Cabral went on a derogatory and defamatory tirade against lawyers in Goa. The minister falsely alleged that lawyers in Goa are overcharging their clients at the time of conveyancing and registration of deeds and documents and threatened to "simplify the procedures so much that advocates will not be required anymore". While welcoming the suggestion of simplifying procedures, All India Lawyers Union (Goa) condemns in no uncertain terms the false, derogatory and defamatory remarks against the legal professionals in Goa. The Minister has no business deciding what the minimum charges of the lawyers should be. The remarks of the Mr. Cabral at the press conference have been widely circulated by the media and has also gone viral on social media. The tirade of the Minister has made a mockery of the legal professionals in Goa and amounts to defamation. In the circumstances, All India Lawyers Union (Goa) demands an apology from the Minister for his false and defamatory statements against the legal fraternity of Goa, failing which the demand for resignation/ sacking of the Minister will become necessary. Adv. Victor Savio Bragança, General Secretary, All India Lawyers Union, Goa State Committee.
