Dear George, My mother ( she's 86 now and well) fractured her wrist a few years ago. She was in great pain. First thing, I rushed her to Singbal's clinic at Mapusa for an X-Ray. She wouldn't get out of the car, demanding that I take her to the good old bone setter 'Calapur'chea dotoraguer vhorr maka'. No matter how much I convinced her that I shall take her to him after the X'ray, it didn't work. Frustrated, I drove her to this speciallist (near Mapusa police stn). The first thing this guy does is to take her hand in his and twist it so bad that my mother screamed and fainted. My sponteneous reaction was to lift this guy by the collar of his shirt and give him the barging of his life. I told him that he was f'.... quack That he should have sent her for X'ray before touching her hand. I took my mother back for the X'ray ( she was docile now). It was a clean fracture.
Why I am telling this story is because, no matter what names we call our present politicians, they are there to stay because we, time and again elect them, or rather, they get themselves elected by hook or by crook. Like in my mother's case, we the people, refuse to go see a better, modern doctor or avail ourselves of the latest technology to solve our problems. We want 'Calapur'cho dotor' so he can twists us around as he likes. For Goa's ills, there is just one doctor who has prescribed a very potent and a bitter medicine.
