Dear Roland,
When I was a child, Banalcars were called "Banale
pishe", for some odd reason which I was too young to
figure out. Benaulim is totally transformed today. It
is the hottest real-estate address to have in Salcete,
sort of Bardez's Donna Paula counterpart. Pokey
one-bedroom flats start upwards of 20 lakhs and your
neighbours are more likely to be lager louts from the
UK then fellow Goans. Benaulim as you know is that
magical place with a beach on one front and the
paddy-field onto the other front. Builders have
obviously bribed every politician they can find to
convert low-lying land into a construction zone. Maria
Hall still stands, but is just the landmark to direct
taxis to resorts, restaurants and the shabby shops
that line the beach, set up in all probability against
zoning regulations.
In about another five years, Benaulim will be
devastated much like most of Bardez is by now, and we
Goans will remember perhaps with a tear in our eyes,
that Banale pishes are no more. Colva has already gone
to its death.
