Shocking! Eating chicken daily raises breast cancer risk: by Preetu Nair

----

jc's response:

If this headline was meant to shock someone - it achieved its target
wrt at least one person i.e. me.

I submit however that the headline is factually misleading, and that
the article missed an important opportunity to probe more rather than
merely repeat some statements from a 'study' on this very important
topic of Breast Cancer..

It is not the eating of chicken which raises the breast cancer risk -
only the eating of chicken injected by hormones which does that (as
the article but NOT the headline states).

Incidently, there are other additives to chicken i.e. arsenic and
antibiotics.

The appropriate solution to this would be to BAN the use of these
additives. There are two large chicken farms in the US which produce
chickens free from ALL additives and preservatives. No reason why the
same cannot be done in India.

BTW: I will refrain from commenting on the study - until I read the
study itself and see how it addresses the following queries

1: what was the sample size? How was the sample determined?

2: when comparisons were made - were the differences significant?

3: were there any 'controls' in this study?

4: were any of these women on oral or injected contraceptives?

5: were any of these women carrying an oncogene for breast cancer?

BTW: wrt to the following two statements in the Preetu Nair article: i.e.

[# A: Though the research is yet to be completed, the departments
along with NGOs are conducting camps advocating that people go
vegetarian.

# B: "We are emphasizing that instead of eating boiler chicken daily,
they should eat it once a week or shift to eating fish," added Dr
Pinto.]

6: what is the level of PCBs, pesticides and Mercury in Goan fish?

7: What is the level of pesticides/arsenic in Vegetables?

8: what is the level of pesticides/arsenic in Goan ground water?

9: On what comparative basis is the advice given to eat fish and
vegetables instead of chicken?
