Suspense on
candidates as parties play mind games

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, SEPT 25 — Major political parties having their
presence in South Goa are raring to go for the
October 30 bye-polls for the Mormugao Lok Sabha seat, but none of the outfits
appeared certain for the moment as to who their candidates would be for the
polls.

Be it the Congress, BJP, Save Goa Front or the United Goans Democratic
Party, all said they would contest the polls, but preferred to keep the name of
their candidates close to their chest due to strategic reasons.

SGF supremo, Churchill Alemao was in Sanguem this evening along with his
lawyer daughter Valanka to drum up support for her candidature. But, Alemao
appeared cautious, saying “wait for another 4-5 days and you will know on which
party banner my daughter will contest.”

He only reiterated that Valanka would definitely contest the polls and
there’s no going back now. The PWD Minister made it amply clear that unlike
other parties, he already has a set up in South Goa
and exuded confidence that people would vote for Valanka.

On the other hand, GPCC President Francisco Sardinha, a strong Congress
contender for the ticket, said the Congress would insist till the last that the
ticket be given to a senior Congressman and one who is a member of the party.
“The Congress will definitely contest the polls. The homework of short-listing
the probable candidate will begin immediately,” he said, trying to send across
the message that the Congress would field its own candidate and does not Valanka
or any non-Congress person as its candidate.

The BJP too has disclosed plans to field its own candidate. Party leader
Manohar Parrikar told Herald that the BJP “is definitely fielding a candidate,
who will contest on the party banner.”

Asked to acomment on reports that the party would back Matanhy Saldanha,
Parrikar shot back “if I give my comment, all my options will be closed”,
adding “the only thing I can tell is the BJP will field its own candidate.”

The regional outfit UGDP has also disclosed plans to contest, but said the
party needs some time to shortlist its candidate. “We will meet soon to
finalise our candidate”, informed Party Secretary General Anacleto Viegas.
