Yes, the Cracow Black Madona, the favourite of John Paul ll & patroness of
Solidarity movement of Poland, has always been very popular with the Balkan
and the Baltic gypsies.
However, their patron-saint is another black Lady, Santa Sara, I believe the
first African woman to be sainted.
The feast the universal gypsies celebrate annualy in Provence, France is an
event
filled with joy: The music is sublime and entertainment and hospitality to each
& all
unstinted.
I have attended it once in my early days; the memory persists undiminished.
That the Black Madona originated in Egypt is true.
The Blessed Virgin of Perpetual Succour, one of Christianity´s most beloved icon
was painted by early Christians in Egypt modelled on an earlier Egyptian deity.
And, she was and remains, essentially, black, though often represented in other
hues.
And laterly, we have the Blessed Virgin of Guadaloupe, albeit, a bit browner.
Alfred de Tavares,
A grateful beneficiary of Saints.
