Churchill’s absence raises suspicion

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, OCT 28 - Save Goa Front supremo Churchill Alemao has finally stayed
away from the Congress meeting at Lohia Maidan held here on Sunday, raising
suspicions amongst Congressmen over Alemao’s support to the candidature of
Congress nominee Francisco Sardinha.

The PWD Minister, however, was quick to reaffirm his support to Sardinha,
saying he has asked his workers to work for the Congress candidate.

Hours before the meeting, Alemao informed newsmen that he has decided not to
attend the Lohia Maidan meeting on a host of reasons. First, he said his name
does not at all figure in the Congress meeting advertisement inserted in the
local newspapers, and sought to know how he can attend the meeting without an
invitation.

Secondly, Alemao maintained that he has reliable information that his bete
noire Luizinho Faleiro wanted to humiliate him at the Lohia Maidan through his
supporters.

“If my presence at the Congress meeting would kick up a controversy, then
it’s better to stay away than allow my detractors to humiliate me publicly”, he
said.

Alemao said he has conveyed his decision not to attend to AICC observer in
charge Hari Prasad and Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, who according to him,has
shared his sentiments.

Incidentally, Alemao harped on his support to Sardinha’s candidature, saying
“I fully support Sardinha in this bye-polls”.

Congressmen, however, appeared unconvinced about Alemao’s motives. They even
questioned the presence of SGF supporters at the meetings of BJP candidate, Dr
Wilfred Mesquita.

A senior Congress leader informed that Mesquita’s election vehicle is being
driven by Alemao’s former driver, raising doubts whether the driver has been
drafted by the PWD Minister to drum up support for the BJP candidate.
